12 Fun Ways to Celebrate Employee Appreciation All Year Long

Employee Appreciation Day is all about recognising and celebrating employees for their contributions and hard work. It’s been around since 1995, when Dr. Bob Nelson, author of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, introduced the idea.
More than anything, it’s a great opportunity to put the spotlight on appreciation - reminding people why it matters and the difference it can make. Through simple activities and conversations, teams can pause to recognise the effort, support and impact that often goes unnoticed in the rush of everyday work.
But here’s the twist . . .
You don’t actually have to celebrate it on that day.
In fact, why limit appreciation to a single day? You could celebrate it any day of the year.
One day. Two days. Once a month. Or just whenever your team feels like it.
To help spark some ideas, here are 12 simple ways to celebrate appreciation - one for every month if you like. Some are reflective, some are fun, and all of them help people notice and recognise the contributions of others.
1. Appreciation Cards
Each person writes a personalised card for a colleague highlighting something they value or appreciate about them.
2. Appreciation Jar
Throughout the day, people drop appreciation notes into a jar. At the end of the day, the notes are shared with the individuals.
3. Appreciation Wall
Create a physical or digital wall where people post thank-you notes recognising colleagues for specific actions or support.
4. Word Clouds
Collect words colleagues use to describe what they appreciate about each other and turn them into personalised word clouds.
5. Learning Moments
Instead of recognising performance, colleagues share what they’ve learned from each other over the past year.
6. Pass the Paper
Each person’s name goes on a sheet that’s passed around while others write appreciation messages for them.
7. Thank You Chain
Start with one person thanking someone who made a difference to them. That person then thanks someone else, creating a chain of recognition across the team.
8. Community Service
Volunteer together on a charity or community project while strengthening team bonds.
9. Appreciation Quiz
Create a fun quiz where people guess which colleague achieved different accomplishments during the year.
10. Appreciation Bingo
Create a bingo-style game with prompts that encourage people to recognise different colleagues for their contributions or support.
11. Boss Tea Day
Turn the tables! Managers serve tea and coffee to the team for the day.
12. Future Appreciation
Instead of focusing only on past achievements, colleagues write a short message about what they believe a teammate will achieve in the future.
Hopefully these ideas spark some inspiration.
Feel free to adapt, replace or reinvent them to fit your culture - whatever helps keep the appreciation flowing throughout the year.
